A Union soldier’s letter, written by Charles A. Bailey, 3pp., on patriotic lettersheet with original cover, Meridian Hill, December 28,. In part, “On the evening of the 26th ist. a fire broke out in the government stables in Wsshington. 6 stable were consumed by fire and two more were burned down to prevent the spread ... about 225 horses were burned. When the fire broke out, they cut the horses loose and they was running about the streets in all directions ...a dozen or so got in our camp .. the boys caught and had a fine ride. It is nor known how the fire originated. ... early in the morning of the 26th, one of our men was found to be dead in his bed. He was out on pass and came in drunk ... it is supposed he was poisoned in his liquor. ...”
