Charleston citizen’s letter written by “W(illia)m Huntruse,” May 12, 1861, 2pp., VG. In part, “I wrote you on the 14th, the day following the Sumter victory ... I have seen in several northern papers that we lost 3 to 400 wounded and slain. This is a gross falsehood. Wonderful as it may appear, I pledge my word that not a man was killed on either side during the battle & only 3 to 4 of Anderson’s men were killed and wounded in firing the salute when he left the Fort by the bursting gun which was overcharged. ... A great many of our young men have gone to Virginia to help them there in our holy and good cause. We fight for our homes & friends and we will and must conquer. ....’
