A Confederate soldier's four page letter, written by T B. Burriss who enlisted on 2/1/1861 and mustered into "B" Co. SC 4th Infantry. Dateline, Army of Northern Virginia, Near Gordonsville (VA), April 30, 1864. In part, "On Friday last, Gen. Longstreet's entire army was reviewed by Gen. Lee. Citizens say that they are much surprised at the very good appearance our troops present They expected to see us worn out in rags ... Rumor says we will go to Chancellorsville ... They affirm that Grant will not fight until he is advanced upon by our forces. An advance is premeditated as railroad bridge timbers are being framed at Gordonsville to span all the stream between this and the Potomac. The enemy must be very scared of Longstreet. A few days since they made on Madison Court House and fearing that we were reinforcing Gen. Lee, retreated in much confusion ..." Burriss continues by writing to his sister. In part, "I am particularly fortunate in having so many at home to think kindly of me. Even the negroes have called me to mind....I send you a piece of arbor vitae taken off of the Great Natural Bridge in this state ...."
