Original Press Photo, 8" x 10," of Boxing Champion Jack Johnson in the ring. The credits are included identifying the photo as a promotion for the US Treasury Department, raising money through selling war bonds.At the height of the Jim Crow era, Johnson became the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908-1915). In a documentary about his life, Ken Burns notes, "for more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth."
