Union soldier’s 3pp. letter written by John D. McQuaide who on 5/1/1861, mustered into "C" Co. Pennsylvania 38th Infantry. Datelined: Camp Pierpont, Oct. 30, 1861, in part “I sent you two papers with the most correct account of the Drainsville fight of any I have seen yet. Gov. Curten and Simon Cameron was here yesterday and received the reserve after we passed in review. The third brigade was drawn up in line and the Governor made us a very nice speech. Our flags are to have Drainsville inscribed on them. ... There has been a great deal of excitement in the Army about Mason and Slidel. They were given up to the British government now and most .. think we are not .. to fight the English and the South both. ....”
