1882, West Virginia. Five hundred dollar bond. Black / White. Blind embossed company seal at lower right. Coupons attached. Very Fine. The sulfur spring located at what is now the Greenbrier resort began to draw visitors as early as 1778. In the years before the Civil War, many notable individuals visited the site, including Martin Van Buren and Henry Clay. Despite changing hands between Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War, the property survived the war and reopened during Reconstruction and served as the site of the Robert E. Lee’s famous White Sulfur Manifesto. In the wake of World War Two, the resort once again drew a myriad of prominent individuals, including the Duke of Windsor, Bing Crosby, the Kennedys and a number of presidents, vice-presidents and foreign leaders. The Greenbrier also served as the home to a classified, underground facility that is to serves as an emergency relocation center for members of the United States Congress in the event of a nuclear holocaust. The location remained a secret until 1992, when the Washington Post revealed the existence. Immediately following this story, the government decommissioned the bunker, which now serves as a tourist attraction. A fine certificate from this storied location!
