Five Prints, each 10-1/2" x 13-1/4", withdrawn from the British publication, PUNCH, 1861, All VG. To include; "A Likely Story" as America as Captain Jonathon advises John Bull, "Jist look'd in to see if thar's any rebels he-arr". Mr Bull responds, "Oh, indeed! Look after the plate basket, then feth a Policeman". The caption advise, "It was urged by the Federal Government that the Trent afair arose out of the right of search for the rebels of the South." The illustration shows America disrupting the British dinner. ... plus, "Look Out For Squalls" as big Britannia threatens the Americans (the small captain in the illustration) "You do what's right my son, or I'll blow you out of the water." The English citizens demanded that the British Navy respond in force to the Americans over the Trent affair. ... plus, "Waiting For An Answer". The caption advises "A peremtory demand for redress in the case of the Trent was dispatched to America. The cartoon expresses the popular feeling whilst England was 'waiting for the answer'". The illustration shows Lady England gazing across the ocean while manning the cannon. ... plus, "Columbia's Fix". The caption explains, "Columbia 'Which answer shall I send?'" The answer was happily for peace. Columbia sits at a wharf holding the "Peace" dove, while the "War" hawk looks on. ... "Naughty Jonathan" shows Mrs. Britannia speaking to John Bull "There John! He says he's very sorry, and that he didn't mean to do it - so you can put this back into the picckle-tu". A scolded America (Jonathan) looks on. America apologizes to England for the Trent affair. On November 8, 1861, USS San Jacinto, commanded by Union Captain Charles Wilkes, intercepted the British mail packet RMS Trent and removed, as contraband of war, two Confederate envoys: James Murray Mason and John Slidell. The envoys were bound for Britain and France to press the Confederacy's case for diplomatic recognition and to lobby for possible financial and military support.
