A good war-date Lincoln Assassination related letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by "sister belle," West Troy, [N. Y.], April 17, 1865, to her siblings, reading, in part: "àwe have been expecting to hear some good news concerning the downfall of the rebellion. When we heard of the capture of Richmond and Petersburg we certainly thought the Confederacy could not stand much longer, but instead of that news came that all most crushedàthe north to the ground with the deepest and most heartfelt sorrow. The president of the United State [was] cruelly assassinated by a cowardly assassin. To describe the feeling of sorrow and indignation that prevails through the streets of Troy and West Troy is more than I can do. Every house, either, public or private is draped in mourning and every flag is half masted and bound around the edge with black. Yesterday all the bells tolled and they fired guns every half hour from sunrise to sunsetàI can not tell you the half of itàyour affectionate Sister Belleà". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
