Union soldier’s 2pp. letter, Camp Williams, August 26th, 1861, written by Thomas Hstton who enlisted as a Sergeant , 7/23/61 into Pa. 82nd Infantry. Hatton was wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/62 and died 7/5/62. In part, “We are encamped about one mile from Wahington City in a splendid location ... The view from our camp is very fine, we see Washington City, Georgetown, Alexandria ... there is about seventy-five or one hundred thousand troops encamped in sight. ... I have been over a great part of the City, marching up one street and down another but it is the meanest place that ever I seen for to be the Capitol of the United States. I visited the White House and several buildings but none are as fine as I thought they would be. ...After pushing back Federal forces in the Battle of Glendale the day before, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union General George B. McClellan's army in the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. Though a Union victory, it brought an end to the Peninsula Campaign and the Seven Days Battles.
