Irvin McDowell (1818-1885) was an American army officer. He is best known for his defeat in the First Battle of Bull Run, the first large-scale battle of the American Civil War. He developed a close friendship with General Winfield Scott, while serving on his staff. He also served under future Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston. A pair of Signed Documents, “Irvin McDowell” as Assistant Adjutant General, each on a General Order, issued Headquarters of the Army, New York. The first, June 29, 1857, instructs regiments movements to various Forts. VG. ... plus, December 29, 1857, appoints Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Harvey Brown Commandant of Artillery School, Ft. Monroe, Va. Brown later was in command of military forces in New York City and later assisted in putting down the New York Draft Riots in 1863.
