A great war-date, and perhaps unique, manuscript Southern poem, 3pp. large folio, entitled: "The Home-Spun Dress", reading, in part: "Oh! yes I am a Southern girl and glory in the name…then glittering wealth or fame: I envy not the northern girl, her robes of beauty rare, tho' diamonds grace her snowy neck…hurrah! hurrah! for the sunny south…three cheers for the home-spun dress the southern ladies wear. This home-spun dress is plain I know my hats Palmetto too…shows what Southern girls for Southern rights will do…now Northern goods are out of date and since 'Old Abe's blockade' we Southern girls can be content to wear what Southern made…a soldier is the lad for me. A brave heart I adore…now young men…if you would in the fair. Go to the field where honor calls and win your lady there…our brightest smiles are for the true and brave…our tears fall for the one that fills a soldier's grave…". Minor toning, margin chips and wear, else VG
